Building Our Future with Youth Corps

The Nyack Community Ambulance Corps takes pride in having a Youth Corps. With a considerable amount of courtesy and professionalism the Youth Corps provides an opportunity for young adults who are 15 to 18 years old to give back to the community in addition to gaining valuable medical knowledge. The duties of a Youth Corps member includes riding on the ambulance as a third crew member along with an EMT and Driver, attending monthly meetings, and participating in Corps activities. It is the hope that Youth Corps members will join the Senior Corps and achieve their EMT-B certification once they become 18 years old.

Before being able to ride on the ambulance, each Youth Corps member is required to be certified in healthcare provider CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens awareness, and Basic First Aid, all provided by the ambulance corps. Youth Corps members are also introduced to the equipment in the ambulance numerous times until they are comfortable before riding. Each member is also strongly encouraged to continue their emergency medical education by taking the New York State Certified First Responder course once they are 16 years old.

Once the Youth Corps member is able to ride on the ambulance, the care that he/she is allowed to administer is limited to the training that they have received. Each emergency will undoubtedly serve as a learning experience and as more time is completed the Corps hopes that the range of skills of the Youth Corps will continue to expand. The safety of each member of the crew is the primary concern of the crew chief (EMT in charge) and under no circumstance will any Youth Corps be put in a potentially dangerous situation.

To join the Youth Corps, simply fill out an application. Applications can be picked up at the Nyack Community Ambulance Head Quarters on Midland Avenue. Once the application is complete, please send it to us or drop it off in person. The Youth Corps advisor will review each application and will call back applicants for a meeting. Once a member, you will receive training from highly experienced professionals who will prepare you to administer prehospital care at its finest. Members who are cleared to ride will receive uniforms and accessories at no cost. All training is at no cost to the Youth Corps Member.

Being a member of the Nyack Community Ambulance Corps will provide you with an experience of a lifetime. Aside from being a learning experience, being a member of the Youth Corps will give you the chance to build strong friendships with other members and you will soon feel that you have become part of another family.

In addition to riding on the ambulance, members of the Youth Corps also take part in many social activities which include but is not limited to the Nyack Ambulance Corps’ annual Holiday dinner, Rockland County annual EMS dinner, Rockland County Youth Fest, and many summer barbeques and picnics. Many members of the Senior Corps went up the ranks from the Youth Corps. Past Board members, Captains, and even Presidents served as a Youth Corps Member prior to joining the Senior Corps. Currently 4 Executive Line members served in the Youth Corps. Now they make important decisions and basically keep the Ambulance Corps running smoothly on a daily basis.

We look forward to hearing from you. The Youth Corps is a great opportunity for area High School students to make a positive difference in their community and learn beneficial skills. The Youth Corps affords a rewarding opportunity for students to gain an insight to the medical field and in particular pre-hospital emergency medicine and emergency management.
